Rootstrap is a Product Design and Development agency, named one of America's Fastest-Growing Companies by Inc 5000 in 2021. We have partnered with them for over 2 years, refreshing their brand and -most recently- creating this video reel to show their best projects from the last 10 years in less that a minute.

Helping Rootstrap to Showcase Their Best Projects with a Video Reel

Aside from having worked with industries ranging from Education to Entertainment and Financial Services, some of Rootstrap's projects were finished with years of difference. Our challenge was to create a consistent and compelling story combining wildly different assets. We're happy with the result.

- "Can you show 10 years of experience in less than a minute?" -"Yes, we can". Of course that summarizing the bulk of Rootstrap's work was way easier than summarizing that conversation, but after selecting their best projects together, creating a storyboard and going through some iterations, we made it happen.

Along with Rootstrap's Marketing team we selected the projects that combined big companies and startups, showcased a wide range of industries and has the most visual appeal.

Collaboration with their in-house Design team was crucial to help us locate the raw materials - particularly from older projects- and get to know each project's background.

The Process

2. Diving deep into the history of each project

The story board we created after selecting the projects. We moved on from their use of pastels to a combination of black backgrounds and vibrant colors to show them as they perceived themselves: skilled, bold and innovative.

Once all the projects were selected, we chose the images that were the most impactful and more likely to allow for smooth animated transitions. We then laid out a story board to confirm that the system worked.

Having set up a strong design foundation, we moved on to animation, creating versions for both mobile and desktop viewports, and combining techniques from Motion Graphics and frame by frame animation to get the exact feel we wanted from each frame.

The Results

Rootstrap wanted to stop being perceived as a development-only agency. The video reel is now one of their main pieces of marketing and gives potential clients a quick and impactful sample of the company's design skills.

But here's another really important outcome: Rootstrap's members say that the video makes them feel proud of the company and their teammates.

Yep! We're all about design driving result and creating a sense of community.

Rootstrap was born as a dev shop, offering staff augmentation services to other companies that needed to grow their Engineering team. After the company's rapid growth, they decided to expand their service roster to include Product Design and Strategy, but were struggling to show this transition to potential clients. Rootstrap was designing amazing products, but their portfolio didn't show that. We proposed their marketing team to compile their best design projects into a video reel.
